The Year 1917

On the Romanian Front, the Romanian Army had been soundly defeated, but it was not annihilated. French officers had already begun the process of reorganizing and retraining. Troops of the Turkish VI Corps carried out operations near Ismail on the Danube River.

At Tsarskoe Selo, French Ambassador Paleologue met with the Tsar to express his concern over the course of events. He left with the feeling that the Tsar had lost all hope and was resigned to “disaster.”

In the Black Sea, Russian submarine Nerpa scored a success on a small Turkish steamer towing two sailing ships off Shili, near the Bosporus.

In Berlin, a manifesto was issued by Conference of Independent Socialists and Sparticists, which called for revolutionary action by workers.

On 8 January, on the Northern Front, there was heavy fighting south of Lake Babit on the Riga Front. The Russians recovered an island near Glandau on the Dvina River.

On the Romanian Front, the German 9th Army captured Focsani and the region to the north as far as Putna, taking 5,500 prisoners. The Germans continued advancing near Fundeni, and in the Casin and Susitsa valleys in Moldavia.

At Tsarskoe Selo, the Tsar ordered that Prince Feliks Yusupov be banished to his estate in Kursk province for his part in the murder of Rasputin. Purishkevich was allowed to remain at liberty, since he had already left for the front the day after the murder.

In France, arrival of one of a number of groups of Russians to receive training as aviation mechanics in French schools.

On 9 January at Petrograd, the Duma was adjourned until the end of February. A.F. Trepov resigned as Chairman of the Council of Minister, as did Minister of Education P.N. Ignatiev. They were replaced respectively by Prince N.D. Golitsyn, a member of the Extreme Right of the Council of the Empire, and N.K. Kulchitskiy.

At Petrograd, 150,000 workers in key factories went out on strike. Strikes were reported in Moscow, Tver, Tula and Baku.

On the Northern Front, the Russians advanced between Tirul marsh and the Aa River.

On the Romanian Front, the enemy crossed the Putna River north and southeast of Focsani.

In the Black Sea, eight Russian warships ended a five day patrol off the Anatolian coast, sinking 39 coastal sailing vessels.

On 10 January, on the Riga Front, the Russians made progress south of Lake Babit.

On the Romanian Front, enemy forces advanced in the Oitoz Valley, but were thrown back across the Putna River north of Focsani. There was an intense cold spell in Romania.

At Petrograd, there were unfounded rumors of an assassination attempt on the Empress while she was visiting her hospital at Tsarskoe Selo. She supported many medical and nursing facilities.

By 10 January, the Germans claimed having taken over 1.231 million Russian prisoners since the war began.

On 11 January, on the Northern Front, the Russians repulsed a German counterattack in the Riga sector near Kalutsem, south of Lake Babit.

On the Romanian Front, there were successful Romanian attacks in the Casin Valley. The enemy moved forward in the Susitsa Valley and between Braila and Galatz.

At Petrograd, members of the Imperial Family met at the palace of Grand Duchess Marie Pavlovna, signing a collective letter to the Tsar in which they petitioned for a pardon for Grand Duke Dmitriy Pavlovich for his role in the murder of Rasputin. The Tsar quickly rebuffed their plea.

In London, death of Russian Ambassador Count Benckendorff. He was replaced by S.D. Sazonov on the 21st.

The Central Powers issued a joint note repudiating responsibility for the continuance of the war.

On 12 January, on the Romanian Front, the German attack near Kalutsem was repulsed northwest of Braila, while the enemy captured Mihalea on the Sereth River .

At Tsarskoe Selo, British Ambassador Sir George Buchanan had an audience with the Tsar, during which he failed to convince him of the seriousness of the situation. Finance Minister P.L. Bark handed the Tsar his letter of resignation, but the Tsar tore it up and refused to accept it.

In Vienna, at a meeting of the Austro-Hungarian Council of Ministers, Count Czernin stated it was necessary to seek a compromise peace. In Rome, the Allies declared they would strive for the national liberation of subject peoples of the Habsburg Empire.

On 13 January, on the Romanian Front, the Germans were repulsed at Kalutsem and east of Focsani.

On 14 January, on the Romanian Front, enemy forces were being thrown back in the Casin Valley and northeast of Focsani. The Germans captured Vadeni, between Braila and Galatz. Romanian King Ferdinand issued a stirring Order of the Day, exhorting his army to continue sacrifices.

At Warsaw, there was a meeting of the Polish Provisional Council of State, sanctioned by the Germans.

At Tsarskoe Selo, the Tsar ordered Grand Duke Nikolai Mikhailovich banished to his property at Grushevka in Kherson province. The move was intended to frighten the rest of the royal family. The Tsar appointed I.G. Shcheglovitov, a member of the State Council, as President of the Council.

On 15 January, on the Romanian Front, there was indecisive fighting in the Casin Valley. The Russians were unsuccessful in an attack in the Fundeni area. The British RNAS Armored Car Squadron left Galatz for Tiraspol. The three sections stayed there until early June.

On 16 January, on the Romanian Front, Romanian forces recaptured the heights between the Casin and Oitoz Valleys. The Germans were being driven from Vadeni. French General Berthelot arrived in Kishinev from Jasi.

At Tsarskoe Selo, the Tsar removed General A.A. Polivanov as War Minister and replaced him with General D.S. Shuvaev.

On 17 January, on the Romanian Front, General von Mackensen's advance in Romania had been fully checked.

On 18 January, on the Romanian Front, there were unsuccessful Romanian attacks on German positions between the Casin and Susitsa Valleys.

French General Berthelot arrived in Kiev from Kishinev.

At Petrograd, a meeting was held of the Council of Ministers, chaired by new Prime Minister Prince N.D. Golitsyn. Without informing Golitsyn, Protopopov announced that the reopening of the Duma scheduled for the 25th, would be postponed until 27 February. The Okhrana reported that the mood in the capital was taking on a very threatening character. People in the streets were openly and sharply criticizing the government.
